What Causes an Ingrowing Toenail?
An Ingrowing Toenail can be caused in a number of ways including:
- An infection under the nail
- Injury to the nail
- Poor hygiene
- Incorrect toenail cutting
- Incorrect fitting shoes
Do I Need Ingrowing Toenail Surgery?
If the symptoms you are experiencing are minor we can show you an initial range of treatments you can administer yourself in the comfort of your own home. Alternatively we can administer them for you in our podiatry clinic.
These simple initial treatments include:
- When trimming your nails, cut straight across so the edges of your nail extends past the surrounding skin which makes it less likely that the edge of the nail can dig in.
- Keeping the area clean will go along way to reducing the chance of any infection caused by broken skin. Try to create space between the nail and skin, be gentle and leave open to the air to dry.
- Comfortable shoes and socks will give your toes room and allow them to move.
- If you're experiencing pain then take pain relief such as Paracetamol.
When Is Ingrowing Toenail Surgery Required?
If the initial treatments fail to eleviate the problem then surgery will be required. Surgery for an Ingrowing Toenail is usually performed under local anaesthetic at our podiatry clinic. The edge of your toenail will be cut away to make it thinner and create a straight and clean edge.
If there's infection around the nail area then it may be necessary to take a course of anti-biotics.
Are There Extreme Cases Of An Ingrowing Toenail?
Yes. In extreme cases it might be necessary to remove your entire toenail. This will leave you with an exposed nail bed which is a slightly indented area on top of your toe.
There will be a range of aftercare to help speed up your recovery. The toe will be dressed to help to keep the area clean and reduce the chance of infection. Resting and elevating your leg will help with any initial swelling as well as using over the counter pain killers as required such as Paracetamol.
